Sun City and  The Million Dollar Golf Challenge Holiday

In the rugged bush of Southern Africa, in the heart of an ancient volcano, lies the internationally acclaimed resort – Sun City. A pure fantasy of African pleasure. Well known for the host of the annual Million Dollar Golf Challenge, featuring the best golfers in the world – the resort is brilliantly set out, adjoining the neighbouring Pilanesberg National Park, which will delight game viewers as it is a malaria free zone and home to the Big 5.

Pride of the Sun City resort, could well be the Gary Player Country Club. Designed and constructed over 20 years ago, the course has consistently set standards - arguably the best golf course in South Africa. Everything about the golf course and resort breathes quality. The rich green kikuyu fairways give a dramatic contrast to the bushveld backdrop. Strategically placed bunkering and grass mounds make the relatively flat layout, more than interesting. Bent grass greens are in absolute perfect condition. Off the back markers the course measures over 7 000 metres making it one of the longest in the world. However a variety of tees make it possible to shorten the course and render playable for all levels of golfers.

The breathtaking beauty of the Lost City Golf Course never fails to astound golfers. Rich green fairways give a dramatic contrast to the bushveld backdrop and the barren waste bunkers are a special feature of this intriguing course. The desert style design of the golf course has an exotic allure all of its own and the designer, Gary Player has acknowledged it as one of his favourite courses. The Lost City Golf Course can be flexible: playing off the forward tee a course length of 5 953 metres, extending to 6 983 metres off the back tee. The course provides many spectacular views.

The 13th hole at the Lost City Golf Course presents a hazardous area - 38 crocodiles inhibit the water hazard, some of them nearly two metres long. Golfers are discouraged from retrieving their wayward balls from the croc infested pool. The unusual water hazard is just one feature that makes the Lost City Golf Course exciting and interesting to play. No effort was spared to make the course a masterpiece. Playing the back nine is like going on a golf safari. It has often been noted that the game is more exciting when played downhill and this is certainly the case here. In addition to the previously mentioned 13th, holes eleven, fourteen, fifteen and sixteen are all played from elevated tees offering thrill, excitement and challenge to the golfer.

Coastal Golf and Safari offers a Sun City golf holiday package throughout the year and during the Nedbank Million Dollar Challenge, it becomes a special event, where you get to play the course just as the top players in the world have played it. Safari trips and game viewing is included at the nearby Pilanesberg National Park. At the same time you can enjoy the many varied resort activities on offer at Africa’s premier holiday resort
